I've decided to make the singularly fabulous, unforgettable and irreplicable ser Eustace Osgrey my first PC. At start, he has a small, relatively unupgraded keep (hey, at least it's stone!), no city, no sept, no upgrades etc.
He starts married to the neighbouring Lady of Coldmoat, so their children would normally be common heirs, but any CK2 veteran knows this is far from assured. Succession change, revocation, conquest, divorce, claimant, you name it.
Hence, I'm prepared for decades or centuries of trying to come back out of insignificance, of which I'm aware, and which is fine; it is just the way I want it.
However, this is also my first run, and I'm unfamiliar with the mechanics, let alone the AI's habits etc., so there are a lot of things I could miss.
Thus, I'm not asking for heavy spoilers or detailed out-of-the-box action plans, but is there anything I should pay particular attention to, to avoid gimping myself? Especially any mechanics that could be tricky for a newcomer in this situation.
So far it seems I'll need to focus on:
Anything else? Any particular AGOT-unique ways of making some gold for the Chequy Lion Heritage Construction Projectâ„¢?
Also: Why is Standfast shown as a vassal of Goldengrove (Rowan) on the start map but becomes independent of Goldengrove and goes over to the LP right at start? I get the notification about Lord Rowan removing me from his council, so I know I start as his vassal but become independent of him before unpausing. Can this be due to some settings?
Edit: So far so good. Goldengrove/Rowan creates Northmarch almost instantly, declares war on me almost instantly and accepts my surrender with no imprisonment, prestige loss or anything, so all's good. Actually, a lord from the Northmarch apparently has successfully petitioned LP Leo Tyrell to regrant Northmarch to me instead of Lord Rowan, so I'm playing Osgrey Northmarch restored within Ser Eustace's lifetime, with Coldmoat as his vassal. This is probably going to lead to war soon, whether rebellion or Rowan reclamation, so things are far from safe. What's sad is Daemon II Blackfyre's rebellion is faring badly, so Lord Eustace has to allow his better sense to trump the desires of his heart and honour and avoid going over to the Blackfyres just to get slaughtered.

So far it seems I'll need to focus on:
- income generation before even thinking about upgrading the keep or any further castles I might inherit
- inheriting my way into some cities, later a port that could not easily be lost
- inheriting a high lordship when possible without taking too many risks
- becoming Lord Rowan's vassal for RP reasons, but doing so should make my life easier than being directly under the LP, I think
