I think it would be a warranted idea that, instead of giving certain characters rather questionable traits/scores to make them fit their story role somewhat properly in CK2's engine, it could be keener to create some 'story' traits that best fit this. By this I mean unique traits that can't be gained through events/birth/ect, only given to them from the initial start of the game to help make sure that certain characters are given a better chance to live and make the impact they're intended to do. Such as trait(s) that give a moderate boost to HP and AI honor/zeal, a separate one that gives out a moderate duel score rating, making it so certain characters no longer need to be given formidable warrior or the like to serve their role, and be given a warrior level that reflects their true skill and a slight bonus that would let them survive encounters against equally skilled, or give certain characters a better combat score without giving them superfluous traits that might not match up correct, or counter-balance certain negative traits that fits their character but doesn't let their duelist skill match up correctly. Additionally, might be a good idea to consider one or two unique leadership traits that can be added to further boost morale defense and/or damage. Making several different traits for specific leader types would take a lot of work, where as it can be as easily re-created by those two alone. Most fights are won by the morale score instead of head-to-head strength.

Most of the story characters are already ridiculously good to the point of being superhuman. Giving them all a series of unique traits which only they can get and that they can never pass on would not be ideal and it would make that drop off after the first generation even more obvious.

The only character who I think really needs a buff is Stannis. His martial is only 21 for most of the bookmarks and 23 in ACOK despite being renowned as one of the greatest battlefield commanders in Westeros. He has a lower martial than Randyll Tarly who for some reason has over 30 martial, the Blackfish has a martial of 30. Even Victarion Greyjoy, the man he famously curb-stomped in the Greyjoy Rebellion has a martial greater than him, which makes no sense to me.

In some way, this isnt the style of CK2. Give "story" characters advantage over others because they have been given more attention from the writer.
Classic CK2 game is all about clever planning, chaos and unexpected events. Buffing story characters would mean taking away little chances from weaker, less known characters. These lowly lords and custom characters are unique too. They have their own stories... but no one bothered to mention them.
Buffing Stannis makes sense, but otherwise let characters simply be as they are.

There could be a game rule introduced for the "story" characters getting bonuses. So you could have a more canon experience where story characters are the most important people or a more chaotic one where all characters have the ability to rise to power.

Is there at least a way to protect canon characters from being purged from crowded courts? For example; every time I start a game from the COK bookmark something like four of the miscellaneous knights in Stannis's court, who are canon characters, will be purged within the first month of the game. Having cause of deaths like vanished without a trace or dieing of poor health, all dieing on the same day. It happens every time so I know it's not random. Is there any way to, say, add a hidden trait to canon characters that will protect them from purging?
