I honestly think the Chinese Empire could be used to model Asshai/the Shadowlands to a extent; at the moment, the shadow city at the edge of the map is rather poorly represented, although through no fault of the mod. Refluffed and reflavored and with a good chunk of the existing Shadowlands simply blacked out, it could serve to make the area far more important then how it currently serves:
- Asshai's ruler can be represented by one of the various types of misc magic user (firemages, spellsingers, aeromancers, shadowbinders, worshipers of one of the 'darker' gods, ect); the changing of this specific type of takes the place of outright dynastic shifting.
- Whatever group is in favor or disliked by Asshai represent the shifting of magical power in various regions regardless of the overall 'strength' of magic; for example, R'hllor might be the group that is in favor for most of the current timeline, producing Shadowbinders among them, while the Faith of the Seven might be out of favor, leaving a distinct lack of magic. Being 'backed' by Asshai simply means getting access to various magical boons and opportunities like what already exist for worshipers of R'hllor, the Warlocks, and the Black Goat, all of which could benefit from the new mechanics as well.
- Instead of spawning technicians and scribes, individuals like Melisandre and Quaithe are spawned into existence. Yellow Emperor-type events might occur as well, depending on if exiled 'princes' of the city would have followers or not; they can also be fluffed as outsiders who traveled to the city and gathered a army the old fashioned way.
- While the chinese artifacts introduced will likely be best suited to Yi Ti, the various powerful modifiers that will likely exist, given the setting, would likely best be suited towards being magically created instead of through high technology. A ruler, of course, could feasibly spend a great deal of 'favor' and wander the city in search of dragonbones or glass candles. or something more mundane. A individual might have the chance to have a item forged from Valyrian steel, for example, or have a fortune told, get a sliver of dragon lore, and so on and so on.
- The powerful leadership traits could alternatively be given to Yi Ti and Leng (which I would like), or be refluffed to represent outright magical power on the battlefield. Things like this might be appropriate in the context of the setting, like Euron's bloodmagic and other likely weather manipulation that's been present in the series.
- Asshai's behavior would be similar to how the Chinese Empire acts in it's waning decline; it rarely interacts with the outside world, and the Shadowlands would provide reasons for disarray and such. Golden Ages would likely be linked to events, and would likely represent magic returning to the world in general.
