I'd like to put forward an idea for a new taming/hatching game rule...
Valyrian GFX Only - Only characters with a Valyrian graphical culture can tame or hatch dragons.
My reasoning for wanting this is that, unlike the current 'Valyrian Only' rule, it would enable non-Valyrian cultured offspring that retains a Valyrian parent's graphical culture to use their lineage to their advantage. Similarly, it would enable non-Valyrian characters to become dragon riders without making it too easy for them by simply allowing anyone to tame a dragon without ever having a drop of dragon blood in their veins.
Most importantly though, as culture would no longer guarantee the ability to use dragons, it would provide an incentive for the player to actively seek to retain their Valyrian features or risk losing their dragon riding abilities, even as the Targaryens. Tying dragon taming/hatching to graphical culture instead would better replicate the pre-Dance marriage policy of the Targaryens better than any of the current game rules where even 'Valyrian Only' provides absolutely no punishment for becoming ethnically non-Valyrian.

Disagree, I'm afraid. The whole point of the Valyrian Only game rule is to restrict dragons to actual Valyrian cultures, so this proposal would sort of defeat the whole purpose of that. If you want to change this for yourself, you can search for "valyrian_only" in the mod files and add your graphical culture exception in each instance.

I think his argument at least means it doesn't defeat the purpose. Whether it's worth the effort-not my call. But generally the idea behind the dragonlords doing incest was to maintain pure blood to control and tame dragons, and the whole dragonseed thing of the dance of dragons is worth considering too. Genetics in CK2 is represented by graphical culture, with a 10 letter DNA string from both parents combined with one parents culture or a hybrid culture in some cases[westerosi valyrian being an example of a hybrid GXF]. As it stands, if you lack the culture of one of the valyrians but have the genetic GFX your taming chances are equal to having the culture to represent this. Or it has a bonus, can't remember if it's just a modifier or if it's the same bonus as following the culture. But if the targaryens spread their GFX then many others become potent dragonriders.

Well, to me, the lore implies that the ability to tame and hatch dragons is merely down to genetics and has nothing to do with culture. I'm sure a Targaryen that was raised in the Stormlands his whole life and considers himself a 'Stormlander' through and through would still be able to ride dragons, assuming both his parents were full-blooded Valyrians. If the TV show has any weight whatsoever, take Jon 'Snow' as an example. I doubt a dragon cares where his rider grew up or how he dresses/talks, so long as they are of strong Valyrian stock. To be fair though, 'culture' in both this mod and Crusader Kings II in general is extremely vague and seems to be more to do with language than anything else. This is especially true for cultures like 'High Valyrian'. Take the Targaryens as an example. They only speak High Valyrian as a prestige language amongst themselves and generally only ever use the Common Tongue. They follow the Faith of the Seven and probably know no more about Essos than any of their Westerosi subjects. They'd certainly feel more at home in the Westerlands or the Reach than they would amongst their 'Essosi Valyrian' brethren in in Old Volantis, despite sharing a 'culture group'. Culturally speaking, they now probably have much more in common with the Andals than they do with the Valyrians of old. As such, I really don't think the ability to ride dragons should be purely determined by culture. If you want to change this for yourself, you can search for "valyrian_only" in the mod files and add your graphical culture exception in each instance. If it's that easy then I will definitely try it out, thanks

This is mainly what was on my mind. The fact that 'dragonseeds' with a non-Valyrian culture cannot tame dragons if they inherited the culture of their Andal/non-Valyrian parent under the current 'Valyrian Only' game rule. Having it purely determined by graphical culture would rectify this and allow children born to a Valyrian parent in a non-Valyrian dynasty the chance to tame a dragon, so long as they have a Valyrian graphical culture. Similar to how it is implied that the Velaryon children of Rhaenys and Rhaenyra could tame dragons because they had Targaryen mothers.

ManicMayo: I agree with you in regards to the genetics of the story itself - it's very likely that there's a genetic component to dragon taming. I'm talking purely about the game and playability when I speak about my preference for the rule.

Well, if it's specifically a preference thing-that's a simple matter or not using the valyrian GFX rule. Since this was a proposed to a new rule, not replacing the old rule.
