Interesting story. Went to a HEMA school the other day and dude was doing a two year exam of what he'd learned, and during the sparring, despite full padding blunted weapons and extra rounded tips his opponents sword went through his ring guard, through his heavily padded glove and tore up his hand. Accidents happen, and can be pretty brutal even with extensive precautions.
