Hello,
I can't recall if I have suggested this before, I searched the forum but could not find it. But anyways, I am suggesting that the Essosi Valyrians in Volantis be switched to Volantene. This is due to couple of reasons. Now the argument that I believe against this is the term old blood and how they must trace descent from the original valyrian soldiers and merchants who settled the city. This I think can be broken into two parts first the culture aspect and the ethnicity aspect, in that they do not need to be the same as shown by the Daynes who are Stone Dornish Culture and West Valyrian Ethnicity, I believe. For the culture aspect the Old Blood seem to have adopted more of the Volantene culture then hold to that of the Old Freehold. This is exhibited by the people of quality not traveling by foot seems to be a characteristic of Volantene culture, and not the Freehold, as no other Free City has it, nor do the Targaryens seem to consider it all. The key thing that does point to a separate culture is that of the continued worship of the old Valyrian gods, but since we can have separate religions not tied to culture, I do not see why that should be the determining factor. The difference in culture of the Old Blood to those of the eastern city seem no different to me then the different in culture of the lords in King's Landing to the people of Flea Bottom, one more born of socio-economic status vs. culture itself. Now on the regards to ethnicity I do believe they should be changed as well, because we are told that out of all the free cities, that it is Lys where the looks of the Freehold are still found if at all. That would imply that while the Old Blood can trace their descent from the original settlers they do not have the Valyrian appearance today. Well, anyways that is all for this suggestion, Thanks for reading and considering!
