Hey guys, this is my third attempt at an AAR. Basically, I am going to follow the reign of the character we know as The Beggar King, Viserys Targaryen, in my universe, The Last Dragon.
You can read my (somewhat successful) True Dragons: A Song of Fire and Blood AAR here: www.tapatalk.com/groups/citadel/true-dragons-a-song-of-fire-and-blood-a-house-targ-t12927.html
I also started on another AAR as Maegor, son of Aerion Brightflame shortly following Maekar's death. Sadly, that AAR has died from a combination of lack of interest on my part, and the brutal Tapatalk Takeover of the old forums. If you are interested, it was entitled “Dragons, Bright and Dark.” I did churn out a few chapters for that project before it died, and it can be found here: www.tapatalk.com/groups/citadel/dragons-bright-and-dark-a-house-targaryen-aar-t13866.html
In addition, I'd like to leave references to my favorite Targaryen AAR's, which I hope you'll take the time to read:
1.) The Dragon Has Three Heads by jsdunc: www.tapatalk.com/groups/citadel/the-dragon-has-three-heads-aar-t9373.html. This is a truly great AAR, of writing quality rivaling that of George Martin himself. If nothing else, it is a good filler for Winds of Winter. It follows the reign of Aerys III, the son of Daenerys Targaryen and Tyrion Lannister. Full of action, drama, plots, and conspiracies. READ THIS!!!
2.) The Crowned Dragons by MattSR30 (iirc, my browser is not allowing me to go to the Paradox forums to check): forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/the-crowned-dragons-a-game-of-thrones-mod.832650/. Follows the reign of Young Griff and his children and grandchildren. Features the Second Dance, plots, intrigues, romances, and various
3.) The Line of Fire and Blood: forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/a-line-of-fire-and-blood-a-house-targaryen-aar.853474/. Just a good story to read. Follows the Conqueror, his children, and his grandchildren before it fades out. Interesting writing technique.
4.) The Mad Dragon: forums.spacebattles.com/threads/the-mad-dragon-ck2-agot-aar-story.526387/. Hillarious, funny, just a really good read. Follows the Mad King Aerys from before he went mad. Starts at the tale-end of the Ninepenny Kings.
5.) The Iron Dragon: forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/the-iron-dragon-a-got-maekar-aar.1008259/. A King Maekar I AAR that is very interesting for those who have read the Dunk and Egg novellas.
Having given you that extensive reading list, I present to you the begining of my AAR (I'll edit screenshots in later):
Prelude: A Dragon Rises
I am King Viserys, Third of my Name of the House Targaryen, rightful King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm.
It has been nearly two decades since the ignominious fall of my house at the hands of the Usurper and his dogs. My faithful servant, guardian, and eternal friend, Ser Willem of House Darry, has raised me as best he could. He gave my sister and I a home. For that I am eternally grateful.
However, he has given me more than a simple home. He has given me a means to fulfill my destiny. When I was but a boy, shortly following the death of my mother and the murder of my father, brother, niece, and nephew, he signed a pact of alliance with the Prince of Dorne in my name. Now, the time has come to fulfill that pact.
With my marital ties to Dorne secured, and the support of a kingdom in hand, I turn to the Seven Kingdoms to seek out more allies. Though I find him somewhat intimidating, Oberyn Martell, in concert with Ser Archibald Yronwood, Ser Daemon Sand, and Ser Gerris Drinkwater (all members of Princess Arianne's escort), has taken the liberty to inform me of the current political situation in Westeros.
As it so happens, the Reach is ripe for recruitment to my cause. The Master of Coin, Littlefinger (as I've heard him called) had The Usurper's brother, Renly, accused of conspiring with the Tyrells to overthrow the the “rightful” heir. Robert the Tyrant had his brother, his brother's betrothed (the fair Margery Tyrell), and his brother's companion Ser Loras Tyrell, executed without trial. The Usurper has also made the mistake of giving the Stormlands to his next brother, Stannis, who is ill-loved. It won't take much for the Stormlords to desert the Baratheon cause en masse. This incident has also led to the dishonorable relieval of Ser Barristan the Bold of his duty as Kingsguard after he tried to intervene. Now, the greatest knight in the known world follows me...
The Red Viper has also informed me that both Jon Arryn, the Usurper's Pet, and his heir have died in quick order, leaving rulership of the Vale of Arryn to a female-line Hardyng, who has deigned to take the Arryn crest, words, and name. This hardyng boy, named Harrold, has supposedly shown great ambition and pride in his adopted house. I have no qualms with this boy, who by all accounts has shown much potential, and I need Westerosi allies; for Dorne and Darry, and even the Reach are not enough to win me my throne. I therefore decide to send Oberyn Martell (who the Usurper thinks is touring the Free Cities) to the Vale with a message; the hand of my maiden sister Daenerys in exchange for 'Arryn' support.
Lords across the realm look in askance at their service to the Kinslayer Robert, who usurped his rightful king, murdered his brother, and some of the noblest lords and ladies in Westeros besides. The man who pardoned the Kingslayer, who violated his sacred vows. The man who not only justified, but applauded the murder of my innocent niece and nephew. The man who sent my brother to the grave. They look in askance at their service to Robert, and then they look to me, their rightful king... and wonder.
Yes, men and women, noble knights and fair ladies, great lords and and commoners alike across the Narrow Sea cry out for their rightful king. The day nears in which I will cross the Narrow Sea and send the Usurper and his entire ill-bred brood to the ground. The day comes when Tywin the Dog's head, and those of his sons and his Mountain and Hound, will decorate the Red Keep.
The day approaches when I will plant my red dragon banner in the soils of Westeros, and all true men will rally to me.
My good father, the Prince of Dorne, wants vengence and justice for his sister and our nephew and niece.
I will give him that and so much more, for I bring vengeance for those who have been wronged, justice for those who have wronged, and fire and blood for those who oppose me.
I am Viserys, the Last Targaryen. The Last Dragon. And I will not fade silently into the darkness.
