What if the lord of light as we know him is actually a high valyrian sorcerer who did a large ritual sacrifice of every man woman child and dragon in the valyrian mainland in the fires of the earth to elevate himself to god like status, and then refined the old valyrian blood magic to allow non-dragonbloods to properly draw out the power of suitable blood through burnt sacrifice, and the religion exists as a means to sustain this sorcerous usurper who draws out and returns a part of this power from the sacrifice to encourage further sacrifices in hopes of gaining more of this borowed power?
And yes, I know, hell of a runon sentence. Don't think semicolons would fix that insane musing.

Full Metal Alchemist style? It's interesting, but I don't believe we will see any gods, or real info on them one way or another. Martin has said that he won't bring them in, and rather leave people to act in their names, for good or ill.

Wasn't quite thinking FMA but it's a valid jumping point yes. Was more thinking more traditional ideas of blood magic that allowed the sorcerer to exist as a spirit basically rather than a living rock, and thus able to exert influence into others, maybe via pact magic or the like sealed by a mixture of faith and burning people at the stake.
However, it'd really cause more trouble than it's worth to bring in any diety, even the lord of light who does seem to demonstrate actual power and influence. Just would annoy many fans and other things, though I feel that him being essentially an undead valyrian sorcerer may annoy slightly less people and if done vague enough give some interesting new discourse about the doom since instead of being a radnom super volcano erupting it becomes a disaster specifically created for a purpose-though you could say that even without the valyrian sorcerer bit. Maybe the lord of light is a legit diety just needed his own sodom and gamorah to burn into cursed ashes. That's a view I'm personally more behind even if less amusing, the lord of light just wanted to burn a barrier for his faithful to the ground for X crimes against him and thus valyria burned.

I have always thought of the Doom somewhat like the Balrog in Khazad-dum. The valyrians dug too deep and somehow caused the volcanoes to go off. I had never thought of Rhllorians being involved. I have always assumed they were only in Asshai and the far east until the Doom and then they moved into the Free Cities regions with the power vacuum. First Volantis, and as Volantis conquered, first Valysar, Volon Therys, and Selhorys, then Myr and Lys, and after the fall of the Tigers it spread more from missionaries.

I really like this interpretation.
