Them: "I've decided it's not the right thing to do!" Me: "Look dude, I've already secretly murdered the last three rulers who wouldn't do this. Don't make me wipe out your entire family line for the sake of a few bastards."
Seriously though, I'm not short of prestige or piety, and rulers can't take the high ground with me when they have two lovers and syphillis. What does it take for my ruler to legitimise my bastards? I don't like marrying because then I have to accept a tonne of inferior. unwanted sons that are born at inconvenient times (like when I'm 50) that I have to build six castles for, when I could just seduce geniuses, strong people, quick people etc and only acknowledge the children with decent traits.
Any insights?

lol. Pretty sure just their opinion of you. Curious though, do you have a claim on the titles of your liege? Cause then, that'd also affect their opinion of you. But all around, just, how much they like or dislike you.

In looking at the event file I know things like just, zealous, cynical, and content affect it. It doesn't often work for me, but when I've had success it was because they were kind and content AND I gave them money first. Mind you, sometimes I did that and still failed. The last time however I was an old gods in the North and the regent of the Iron Throne was the High Septon. His opinion of me wasnt very low and a 'gift' made it quite high. He granted it.
I then roleplayed that the terms were that my son and I convert to the Faith of the Seven, marry new wifes (we were both unmarried) who followed the Seven, and raise any children of said unions under the faith.
Was fun to do that.

Thanks guys, so if I suck to them up, pay them off and and hold off on fabricating claims on their stuff until I have my heirs, I'm good?

You certainly have a better chance. Keep in mind though, the request scopes to the TOP liege, so the Iron Throne if you are in Westoros. So an empire tier title (So Robb or Balon can legitimize a bastard during War of Five Kings).
Keep in mind as well that if the top liege is under a regency then the REGENT will be the one actually making the decision. (that's why I had to charm the High Septon even though I was a Northern lord)
