Want to be a translator ?
Tutorial to translation
Hello, fellow non english speakers ! Are you german, spanish, polish or from whatever country which does not speak (in barbarian) english ? Do you want to play the mod in your mother tongue ? Do you want to translate this (amazing) mod ? So…

But you’re maybe frightened to translate. Where do I start ? What are the files that I should translate ? Where are they ? Why Werther is so awesome ? So many questions and so few answers. But don’t worry, i’ll explain to you how to have the perfect translation for the mod.
If you want to translate just (flood) PM some of the admin and ask for a dropbox key. But I think you have to proove you’re motivation by translating some of the files before.
Let’s start !
I. Localisation : the pain
Where ? A Game of Throne/localisation
It’s a big job. You have to translate tons of files and lines. It took me 2 month to translate all the files one year ago for the 0.1, and now there are so many more. You must have a huge motivation if you want to succeed.
What is it ? It’s .csv files, you can open it with excel or notepad (I personally prefer excel). It translate all the events, provinces, titles etc… In these files there are columns, the first shows the name in the other files (like trait_bastards and events), the second is the english localisation, the third the french, the fourth the spanish and the fifth the german. You just have to write the translation in your column, that’s it.
Tips 1 : There is weird stuff in the lines like [From_Name], it’s the name of the characters (look at the sentence and try to respect your langage). You can have [Titles], [Capital] and other stuff, you should quickly understand what it is. There is some [She/He] and [Him/Her], sometimes you can not use them if your language don’t need to (for exemple in French –like in spanish- the gender of the possessive determiners agree with thing owned, not the owner so we don’t have to use [Her/His]).
Tips 2 : You must respect Martin books and the translator in your language. Try to be canon, for french user it’s easier because the french wiki is really big and gives the english name in all the articles and have links to the english wiki (a wiki of ice and fire : google it). Unfortunately it will be much harder with other languages (but spanish and russian have wiki too). You need to have a good knowledge of the Westeros universe.
Tips 3 : If you are already in the dropbox, please don’t translate in a copy and paste him in the localisation folder or you will delete the new stuff.
II. The Dynasties file
Where ? In A Game of Throne/common/dynasties
Why ? In the vanilla the names are not translated (it’s the Hohenstaufen or the Capet) so you have to make a copy with the translation.
What is it ? It’s a .txt file, you should use notepad++ to edit it. Just replace the english house name with the translation.
Tips 1 : If you are already on the dropbox, don’t forget to change the copy of the dynasties.txt or the english will have the dynasties in your language.
Tips 2 : like for culture.txt and the events files, don’t forget to be up to date. If a modder adds a new house in the english files you will not have the dynasty in your file/language. You can make a list with the names that you have to change, but after translating all the dynasties make a copy of the engish dynasties files so you can compare it with the original dynasties.txt with winmerge to find the new stuff and add it directly to your translated file.
III. Culture file
Where ? In A Game of Throne/common/culture
Why ? If you don’t do that the lowborn will have name like X of X.
What is it ? It’s a folder with near 10 files for each culture. Make of copy and translate it. You just have to change this from_dynasty_prefix = "of " to from_dynasty_prefix = "de " (french exemple). For the wildling you have to change a " Son of ".
Tips : stay up to date and don’t forget just change a copy.
IV. War folder
Where ? In A Game of Throne/history
Why ? If you don't do that the wars will be not be translated (like War of The Usurper or the Dance of the Dragons).
What is it ? A folder with a file for each war. You just have to translate the name of the war (first line).
Tips : stay up to date and don’t forget just change a copy.
V. Files for pre conquest scenario : crownlands.txt, corwnlands_ancestors.txt, stormlands_ancestors and aegon_landings_events
Where ? For crownlands.txt, corwnlands_ancestors.txt and stormlands_ancestors in A Game of Throne/history/character ; for aegon_landings_events in A Game of Throne/events
Why ? If you start a scenario before the conquest some provinces (like King’s Landing) or titles (Iron Throne Kingdom) will not be here and will be replace with older names (Blackwater Hill for Red Keep). So if you don’t do that the older location name will be in english and if Aegon succeed, and creates the Kingdom and King’s Landing, the name will be in english (so « Roi de Iron Throne »).
Make copy of this files and replace the name with the translation. Use the « search » and « replace all » fonctions of Notepad++.
The list of replacements
Crownlands: Summerhall
Crownlands ancestors: Iron Throne/Blackwater Hill/Blackwater Bay/Red Keep/King's Landing/Durranvale/Blackheart/Blackheart Keep/Summerhall/North Road/New Gift
Aegon: the King/The Iron Throne/King's Landing/Red Keep
Stormlands ancestors: Durranvale/Blackheart/Blackheart Keep
Tips : these files are often edited or changed at the last minute. You can compare your file with the english to see if stuff was not added, but be careful, if you forget something (like } ) it could cause CTD.
If you do that you’re a master in the translator guild. Good luck colleague !
