Heyo all,
So recently I've been pretty much addicted to this mod however there's only really one system that I find a little fault in and that's duels. Don't get me wrong I love the idea it really actually adds a certain new level of danger and immersion to battles to be spotted by an enemy commander and engage them in combat however I feel like there could be a lot more flavor to it because as it stands; it seems like a largely rock paper scissors type deal where you just pick one and hope you win and even if you outclass your opponent to a large degree in all traits (say having valyrian steel armor, sword and trained battle skill) they can still overpower you entirely and kill you in one turn. My suggestion would be to have more variety when in stages of battle and having more options.
More stages I'd suggest would be things like a stun stage or a disarmed stage wherein perhaps instead of straight up an enemy breaking a defense and putting you on the ground it'd have a chance go to another stage where you have another, albeit low, chance of defending yourself or throwing out a suicide swing (which could make it so you can't have a chance to yield) or a disarming stage where you have to roll away to grab your sword. Perhaps even an event where a soldier from your army runs up to help and you could do something like a choice in the duel to either let him join and have your duel skill go up like 2 and lose like 50 prestige or tell him to not help and gain prestige. I feel like these would add a lot more to an already great system purely because after fighting duels for a while it can get a bit dull, but then of course I am not a modder nor will I pretend to be. I have no clue if these are feasible to add to the system however I feel like the battles would flow a bit more organically this way because after knocking back a desperate fighter as the better duelist, you'd then decide whether to choose defence to go back to the attack phase and give the defender a better chance of taking you down again but also giving yourself a better chance too or to attack them while they're staggered opening yourself to attack but also chancing ending the fight a lot quicker
I found an old thread of the developer of the system suggesting things like if a character has the strong trait to be more likely to break a defence which I think from looking into the code may already be implemented (I have no idea though bc like I said I'm by no means a modder :') ) but perhaps adding new options to the event menu like having high intrigue leading to a low blow attack like a kick thats more likely to stun an opponent whose honourable and wouldn't see it coming or high diplomacy and literally talking down a fight so you don't have to risk your life. Or while someone is down in the "I yield, I yield!" Phase if you're ruthless having the option to do some awful stuff like castrating them then and there or maiming them to add to the immersion.
I feel the balance of this would have to be largely shifted to the person with better stats for dueling purely bc these are all only great if you're on the receiving end of well trained sword and disadvantage the better duelist but I'd like to know what everybody else thinks?
