The reason I'm asking is I've hit that not so rare bug which crashes the game on saving after a certain time. In my case the time itself is not the problem, as editing the save manually from 31 Dec to 1 Jan next year buys me another year of time. Hence this clearly must be one of those things scripted to happen on 1 Jan. And something that won't crash the game just because it happens but will crash it midway through running the save.
So two questions:
1. What happens on 1 Jan?; and 2. Of those things what are the most likely candidates to wreck a save (CTD while saving) without causing an immediate CTD?
The player character can be excluded, as her death doesn't prevent the problem.

The massive number of characters that have to get portrait changes, on_action events and the like is a likely cause. Plus the act of saving itself may be an issue, if you have autosaves enabled.

I've disabled autosaves for this reason, so only manual saving. If I don't let 1 Jan pass but always remember to save on 31 Dec and manually change to 1 Jan next year (done this several years already), then I'm fine, though this requires me to quit the game every year. But if I allow the game to change the year on its own, then it will crash on me.
The compressed save weighs about 20 MB and 90-something uncompressed, so I'm wondering if the chronicle isn't a problem, but the base game handles 700-years worth of it quite fine, so probably not.
This is 250-ish years into the game, so all canon characters should be dead except for some mythological creatures or the ruins.
The problem started when I went into a faction rebellion against the IT. Wonder if that has something to do with it.

Update: took about 10 years of editing until eventually I no longer had to. I think it was partly random, because I'd previously tried to play on for several years without saving, and that didn't work. So now I'm free of the problem. Could this information be put in a FAQ or something? Here on these boards and during my Google searchs I've noticed many people seem to run into this problem, also in other Paradox games. It could be nice to let them know there is a known solution that may be a little cumbersome but will eventually work.

I also had the bug occur about 220 years into a game and only took 10-15 years of edited saves to work itself out as well. Previous versions I'd had to resort to this method for a lot longer. I know the depopulation / repopulation scripts run on jan 1, but not really sure what else. If you resort to the save edit dec31/jan 1 trick provinces decimated by disease will not recover. Also Dejure Assimilation seems to run on January 1st as well.

Thank you. So there are clearly some downsides. Sigh. I've just hit the bug again, hope it won't keep me editing for centuries. That said, I guess I wouldn't mind letting this game/save rest till next patch or two. At this point I'm more or less managing the Iron Throne without any clear threats or things to do, so it's mostly like decking out my demesne, surviving and having fun.
