In a certain play through with Aegon (young Griff) once I won the Iron Throne I was awarded Blackfyre by the Golden Company.
However, I could not replicate it since in two other play throughs. The Golden Company simply disbands but doesn't give me the sword.
In all three cases I made sure to switch to "Get Valyrian Sword" ambition. Admittedly the last two play-throughs I switched to that ambition slightly later than I had in the one where I got the sword so it could be the length of time since I enabled my ambition.
My other thoughts are that it could be something to do with Daenerys and marriage with her? In all playthroughs I married Daenerys but I can't seem to recall at what point I married Dany in the original playthrough when I got the sword (before or after winning the throne I can't recall).
Can anyone shed some light on this issue?

I think you only have a chance of getting Blackfyre if you win, it's not a certainty that you'll get it.

Well, yeah, it's a lost sword. It's just a chance you'll get it.
If you really want it that bad: add_artifact characterid blackfyre

Yeah, it works. Other wise, play as the house who lost their sword and select the ambition to find a VS sword and you've got a small chance of finding your family's lost blade

Honestly though, if I'm that hard upon family's getting their accurate swords, I just use the console. It's nice seeing Lannisters with brightroar and Bronze Yohn with Lamentation.

No, just add the artifact, they'll get the trait when they die. I'm not sure how careful you have to be, but I'm guessing multiple swords of the same name would cause issues.

Seems he only gets it guarenteed if dany takes the pentos branch and marries him rather than qarth or slavers bay branches. In current version anyways.
If you have a lost family sword and have the obtain VS ambition, the quest has a decent chance I believe of granting your dynastic blade rather than a generic. For houses with multiples such as targaryens, this becomes harder as the most likely to reclaim it-the king on the iron throne-likely has the other one on hand unless he passes it to his heir.

If so, I've never noticed that before.

It was only added a couple versions ago when VS finally became artifacts.
