In the main CKII game, this isn't a problem, but I'm having issues with becoming independent in AGoT. Problem 1: Independence is grayed out because sub-vassals can't declare independence when their liege has dejure claims on my land. Isn't this impossible to enable, because my liege should always have a claim to my titles. That's the whole point of them being my liege. What's mine is theirs.
Problem 2: Demand Abolition of Monarchy rarely is available. I guess I have to just bide my time until the laws roll my way? How can I influence the laws of a kingdom when I can only directly interact with the next higher tier rank?
Solution: Don't play as a Count. I know that's not a good solution as it just avoids the problems altogether, but it's the only one I'm seeing.

I don't think you can declare independence as a count under a duke under a king in vanilla. You should take the duchy, then you'll be able to influence laws, form independence faction, etc. Or play as a count and have no direct influence on the realm, as it should be (or play as a count with no duke liege like Bear Island, though it's still a bit hard to influence the realm then).

I don't think you can declare independence as a count under a duke under a king in vanilla. You absolutely can - success causes you to roll up directly under the King, instead of under the duke.

Just conquer the dukedom. Prevents the king tier from transferring you back.
