I'm playing Aegon's Conquest, no mods, PVZS, and I'm encountering lots of maester bugs again.
1) During the last years of Aegon's rule there was no grandmaester (after the first one died). A new grandmaester is selected immediately after Aegon's death, though. 2) When he was selected, I noticed that his chain links are inactive, for he is not part of the society. Then I checked the other maesters of the realm and... oh dear! In all the realm there were only around 3 maesters that were in the society! And dozens of maesters outside of it.
I checked the maester events and I did not found any maester maintenance event that makes regular maesters join the society. They are meant to join it as soon as they become maesters, but if they for some reason fall outside of it, there is no maintenance event to make them join. There IS a maintenance event that makes the holder of the citadel join the society. And the automatically generated grandmaester also SHOULD be part of the society (there is a "join_society = hermetics" line there, but it doesn't work for some reason...) There is also an event for archmaesters that makes them join - but I didn't find an event for regular maesters.

I found out that my maester problem is much bigger than I had previously thought.
I can't see the Citadel society in the list of the societies. I thought that it is meant to be like that, but it turns out I was wrong. So probably this is the same bug.

Do you own the Monks & Mystics DLC?

No I don't. I thought I shouldn't own it because usually societies in mods do not require Monks and Mystics, but for some reason the Maester society is the exception. So, I guess, problem is solved.

No I don't. I thought I shouldn't own it because usually societies in mods do not require Monks and Mystics, but for some reason the Maester society is the exception. So, I guess, problem is solved. It's blocked at lines 13-15 in common\societies\00_societies.txt: (in the mod directory, not the regular CK2 directory) active = { has_dlc = "Mystics" } You can comment out those lines to enable it without the DLC. Beware, though! If anything inside the society relies on functions that are only available with the DLC this may cause serious bugs or other issues. Or it may work perfectly fine. I can make no guarantees except to guarantee that I have no idea how it would work out.

The reason why the Maesters don't work without DLC is this. While other societies are made completely from scratch (and are listed in the AGOT_societies file), the Maester society is in fact a vanilla society. And vanilla societies are disabled without the DLC. So the only way to make them work without the DLC (absolutely legally) is to remake them from scratch.
As for the disabling the "has_dlc" line, I don't think I'll do it. I don't want problems with Paradox - it's easier to buy the dlc.
