So if you manage to take over the golden company (e.g. become its commander) you can't hire them from the mercenary tab for some reason. While the same isn't true for any other merc company. I understand this has something to do with the Golden company availability being a bit different from regular mercs. But surely this is an oversight/bug when the commander himself can't raise them?

How did you became a GC commander? Usually it's a game over.

I though all merc companies were unplayable.

It's simple really. What you need to do is make sure that your heir is/becomes the Lord commander. Then when your current character dies your heir will inherit your titles whilst keeping the commander title. It isn't an oversight mechanic either (well kinda) since you can actually hire your own merc company for free with minimal upkeep. This doesn't work for your own creatable merc companies though, (e.g. the ones you can create yourself). In the golden company's case though you can only get them to appear in the merc tab if you temporarily unlock them through the intrigue action that hires them for 400 drakes, or by having the Lord Commander as a direct vassal. But you see, the hire action doesn't appear for you if you're the Lord Commander, and you can't be your own vassal either. That's a bummer.
