Just wondering whether it's something on my end or not. In the current version, there are dozens of rulers excommunicated, from baron all the way up to Lord Paramount. Not sure what's causing it, or if I'm experiencing confirmation bias. If I had to wager a guess - it seems as if it's become easier to request excommunication.

Now that you mention it, it does seem like there are more excommunications than in previous editions. What Faith Authority are you under? I started as Aegon the Conqueror and have never changed it, i.e. I still have the Faith Militant running around. I wonder if Faith Authority might have something to do with it.

I've seen it with both medium and low authority. I haven't been playing much of the higher-authority starts on this patch, but I'll check it out to see if there's a difference. I would hate to think it's even worse than it has been on low. Update: Can't imagine why he would be excommunicated besides the high septon being in the war with me.

I'm playing a Century of Blood campaign as the Storm King, and any time the King of the Reach attacks or is attacked by someone, that person gets excommunicated. It has to do with the fact that when the High Septon becomes another character's vassal, he seems to use excommunication as a weapon against his liege-lord's enemies with a ridiculous frequency. I don't know if that also happens in the vanilla game, if the Pope is subjugated, but it certainly happens in this mod frequently. If you're the King of Westeros, I suppose you could just grant him Independence and not re-conquer him; that might solve the problem.
I can't figure out what to do in my campaign though, short of just murdering the High Septon and bribing his replacement into more friendly relations. I've had to do that 4 times in 25 years in my current game, and of those 4 times, 3 were instances where I was defending against the King of the Reach rather than attacking him.
I have Low Faith Authority, but I haven't gotten the Event where he tells me to raise it or else, and then excommunicates me if I don't. I've just been excommunicated immediately after the King of the Reach declares war on me (and one time immediately after I declared war on him).
This shit makes me want to just convert to the Old Gods, and be done with it lol

Could the high septon be a non-vassal title like the pope? Or are independent titles with only baron level holdings impossible?

For some reason Paradox recently made the AI incredibly zealous when it comes to excommunications. For the next update I've taken out the vanilla excommunication decision and replaced it with a new decision so we can control the AI.
